On 15th January, we are running a course covering the new British Standard 8680, which was released by the British Standard Institute back in July.

Our virtual course, which will be via Microsoft Teams, will take a deeper look into the standard and its impact. Below are further details:

  • Course Date: 15th January, 09:30 – 13:00

The government’s guidelines issued to reduce transmission of COVID-19 has seen many businesses and public sector organisations greatly reduce occupancy and, as such, water systems may have seen increased potential for stagnation.

Water stagnation is a significant issue and is one of the key factors that needs to be reduced as far as reasonably practicable to manage risk.

To assist facility management departments in planning for reoccupation, we have produced a guidance document offering some insight on the considerations for water safety during the planning of workplace reoccupation, with specific focus on commercial offices, education and public sector.

BS 8680 Water Safety Plans Code of Practice has been released by the British Standards Institution. It is the only document that collates all relevant guidance on how to implement and operate a water safety plan.

A water safety plan is a framework of processes to ensure water safety risks of all types including physical, biological, chemical and radiological are identified, eliminated or managed, and reviewed. The document should not be large and unwieldy, instead it should be proportional to the size and complexity of the organisation's systems/estate. The standard identifies a step by step process for creating a suitable water safety plan.

The water safety plan is a concept endorsed by the World Health Organisation and it is suggested that it should be adopted by all sectors and organisations. The standard includes in depth detail on:

  • Governance
  • System and risk assessment
  • Risk factors in healthcare
  • Scheme of control
  • Project management including design, installation and operation
  • Supporting programs

Going forward, it is anticipated that water safety plans across the healthcare sector will require an in depth review to align with the standard, and that other sectors may introduce the water safety plan concept.

At this difficult time the control of legionella is probably the last thing on our minds. However, any owner of any commercial premises still has responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to maintain water systems in a safe manner.

Our short guide will explore a few things that you need to consider throughout this period including your responsibilities and suggested actions when buildings are empty and when access is still required for essential workers.
