BS 8680 Water Safety Plans Code of Practice Released by BSI

BS 8680 Water Safety Plans Code of Practice has been released by the British Standards Institution. It is the only document that collates all relevant guidance on how to implement and operate a water safety plan.

A water safety plan is a framework of processes to ensure water safety risks of all types including physical, biological, chemical and radiological are identified, eliminated or managed, and reviewed. The document should not be large and unwieldy, instead it should be proportional to the size and complexity of the organisation's systems/estate. The standard identifies a step by step process for creating a suitable water safety plan.

The water safety plan is a concept endorsed by the World Health Organisation and it is suggested that it should be adopted by all sectors and organisations. The standard includes in depth detail on:

  • Governance
  • System and risk assessment
  • Risk factors in healthcare
  • Scheme of control
  • Project management including design, installation and operation
  • Supporting programs

Going forward, it is anticipated that water safety plans across the healthcare sector will require an in depth review to align with the standard, and that other sectors may introduce the water safety plan concept.
