Legionella and Legionnaires Disease

Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia that can have severe consequences for some, especially older people. People become infected when they breathe in air that contains Legionella bacteria in very fine droplets of water known as aerosols. If the bacteria are inhaled they can cause serious infections in the lungs.

Legionella bacteria live naturally in water but if they get into water systems in buildings they can cause a grave risk to humans through air conditioning systems or through contaminated water systems used for showers.

Control and prevention of the disease is through treatment of the source of infection - the contaminated water systems.
